Conception Bay South – So Much to Explore!

Welcome to the Town of Conception Bay South! A bright and vibrant community that is only too happy to share with the world all that it has to offer! Our Town is home to approximately 25,000 people with a service area of over 237,000. We boast magnificent coastline vistas, abundant wildlife, and a healthy serving of warm and friendly culture. Come on, let us show you around…

Topsail Beach Rotary Park

Let’s start our adventure by dipping our toes in the warm waters of Conception Bay at picturesque Topsail Beach. On a fine summer day, this beach will be filled with people enjoying the sun and surf. This is an unsupervised swimming area, so be sure to exercise caution if you venture out into the water! Evenings on Topsail Beach are filled with the sounds of music and laughter, as residents and visitors alike roast marshmallows on bonfires built in the pits provided along the shoreline.

Making our way west, we circle around the main trail loop through Chamberlains Park. This trail was constructed entirely by a small group of dedicated volunteers, whose efforts will ultimately be rewarded when the trail is officially opened in late September 2014.

Watch your step now, as we navigate our way along Manuels River on the rugged and beautiful trail system developed and maintained by the Manuels River Natural Heritage Society. First recognized for its unique geology and exceptionally well-preserved trilobite fossils in 1874, Manuels River has long-been a year-round destination for exploration. Now boasting the world-class Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, which also features a cafe, gift shop, and the Town’s Visitor Information Centre, the Manuels River experience has something for everyone.

Next we will take a leisurely stroll down Main Street, Conception Bay South’s principal commercial district. Here you will find a wide variety of business interests including restaurants, grocery stores, financial institutions, and numerous other consumer goods and services.

Near the end of Main Street, we find the Conception Bay South Monument of Honour, which stands as a tribute to those who serve and who have served. From here we will hop on the T’Railway and continue our journey west.

The redevelopment of the T’Railway through Conception Bay South is creating a pedestrian and bicyclist haven for those looking to get away from it all (without really getting away from it all). When completed, the T’Railway will offer a continuous linear route that runs nearly the entire length of the community. It will create a pedestrian and bicyclist link between many of the Town’s current trails and recreational facilities and will encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. The trail hugs the coastline for approximately 6 km, and offers a panoramic view of Conception Bay, including Bell Island, Little Bell Island, and Kelly’s Island.

Arriving in Kelligrews, we now stop at the Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program’s outdoor classroom. We can take a seat on one of the benches and feed the ducks with the special food that’s sold as a fundraiser at local convenience stores. As we pause a moment to watch the sailboats glide across the smooth water, we are reminded just how lucky we are to be experiencing a little piece of heaven…and as the sun starts to set into the bay, you catch yourself humming a few bars of Johnny Burke’s famous folk tune “The Kelligrews Soiree”

Well, we hope you’ve enjoyed your virtual tour of Conception Bay South! We’ve highlighted only a few of the many attractions found in our beautiful town, but we haven’t given away all our secrets…there is still so much more to explore and discover that we encourage you to come visit us in person! Opportunity abounds in this bright and beautiful town, and local entrepreneurs have capitalized on the many tourist attractions that make us unique! Tour boat operators offer you a chance to get up close and personal with nature, providing standard and customized tours. These tours may include diving and snorkeling expeditions, as well as tuna fishing, and are operated from marina facilities located within the Town. A strong tourism sector is a key piece of Conception Bay South’s thriving business community, and as the second largest municipality in the province, we offer many major amenities. Buy a souvenir of your visit in one of our gift, craft and antique shops. Enjoy a meal at one of our cafes and restaurants, some of which offer patio dining options.

Members of the Conception Bay South Parks Commission have built sanctuaries of green space throughout the Town, enhancing the parks and natural areas with trails and garden oases. We invite you to come and find your own special spot…we promise not to tell.

With a feel that is part rural and part urban, Conception Bay South has something for everyone. Opportunity, location, weather, people, coastline, icebergs, whales, and boat tours – we’ve got it all!
